This site is designed to discuss how we help students learn STEM through LEGO robotics both in and out of school. It's summer now. I just ran a weeklong summer camp. Are you involved in any summer robotics activities?
Why Study Robotics?
1. Robotics is an excellent way to introduce the students to integrated STEM areas (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics).
2. Students participating in robotics learn about STEM careers and experience the same activities as professionals solving real-world problems.
3. Everyone – girls and boys alike – should get a chance to see how much fun it is learning engineering skills this way!
LEGO MINDSTORMS in the Classroom
If you'd like to start LEGO robotics in your classroom, perhaps to teach simple machines or the engineering design process, there are lots of fellow teachers who've tried it. This is a great place to share some of your successes and ask for suggestions in places where things didn't work as well as you wished they would have. Robots are one of the best ways I've encountered to show the importance of learning how to calculate ratios - so math teachers, we've got you covered!
FIRST LEGO League Teams
I, for one, know there is a lot of information I would have loved to have known in advance of my first year as a FIRST LEGO League Girl Scout robotics team coach. If you're thinking about being a coach for the first time - or returning as one, you probably have some questions - or some suggestions - for how to start up a team.
Favorite LEGO Resources
Everyone who's been coaching or teaching has got some Favorite LEGO resources. I like to recommend two books, LEGO® MINDSTORMS® NXT Zoo (directions for building and programming NXT robots without rechargeable batteries. so some engineering modifications will have to be made by the students to make up for the slight size difference of bricks where the battery packs stick out) and LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT: The Mayan Adventure. Please share your favorites!
If you feel like you don't even know enough to ask your first question, check out the attached PowerPoint, "Getting Started with LEGO NXT Robotics".
Please share your tips or ask questions. Let's make this a great place to come to discuss LEGO robotics for kids.

P.S.
Have fun today!

*What's a COLLABORATIVE? It's a place where people share. They share their knowledge, their theories, and their questions. It's a place where people come together as colleagues, knowing they're safe to discuss needs and concerns and to receive polite advice and suggestions - and lots of good information!
